An imaginative, elegant way to show off carpet

Harmil's richly textured, multihued carpet samples provided the cue for a distinctive solution to the challenge here: to provide both storage and numerous client meeting spaces in limited square footage. Fradkin & McAlpin hung the samples from tiers of chrome rods, creating walls to demarcate private seating areas for designers to use when conferring with clients. At the same time, a panelized modular wall system in the reception area was designed to make it easy to change displays to highlight new colors and patterns.

Key details

  • Turned the carpet samples into walls
  • Used airplane cable in the design of the showroom’s custom storage and display system
  • Designed a hierarchy of lighting for emphasis
  • For extra drama, had the ceiling painted a loftlike black—unusual among building showrooms
