The Salvation Army Adult Rehabilitation Center, a 1920s former seamen’s home that now provides housing and support for men in treatment, was in serious disrepair. The physical spaces no longer met the needs of the program as it had evolved over the years. Fradkin & McAlpin’s feasibility studies revealed the optimal way to reconfigure both dormitory floors and public spaces, including chapel, cafeteria, and lounge. To support the program’s goals, finishes were chosen for warmth and residential sensibility as well as for durability and ease of maintenance. The chapel’s abundant natural light, its views, and its three-story column-free space feel uplifting and optimistic.
