Mies van der Rohe said it aptly: "God is in the details." Thoughtful detailing can articulate massing, express or deny scale, and express or conceal structure. It can convey playfulness or elegance, formality or ease. It can enhance functionality and create an aura of serenity. A detail like the specific curve of a balustrade or the exact contour of a domed ceiling can render that element beautiful, even inspiring, and can transform the entire space. For that reason, we apply discipline and logic not only to the overall massing but equally to the smallest parts of our projects—the nuances of a shape, the materials, the woodworking joints. Construction documents are carefully drawn to illustrate not just overall concepts but also how the parts should come together. On-site job meetings and site visits ensure that the built project reflects the design intent, and provide a forum to work out unanticipated site issues at the micro as well as the macro level.
