CANstruction

New York, NY

For the past 10 years, Fradkin & McAlpin has participated in New York City's annual Canstruction® competition, in which teams of architects and engineers design and build giant structures entirely of cans of food. The sculptures are displayed to the public, and the cans then donated to local food banks for distribution to pantries, soup kitchens, and similar programs throughout New York City. Initiated by the Society for Design Administration chapters in New York City, Denver, and Seattle in 1992, Canstruction® now takes place in more than 100 locations worldwide and has donated 10 million pounds of food to aid in the fight against hunger.

The Fradkin & McAlpin team's 2008 entry, "One CAN Dream," is inspired by Constantin Brancusi's "Sleeping Muse." Our canstruction was selected by the five jurors as their favorite, winning the top award. This caps a run of special recognition for Fradkin & McAlpin: five of out of our nine entries have taken home one of the competition's six awards.
