Updating a coop apartment for an art-loving couple

A gallery owner and her husband were ready to update their longtime home in a prewar building on the Upper East Side and called on Fradkin & McAlpin. We reconfigured the warren of small rooms and designed a grand hallway between the apartment's public and private spaces. A conscious dialogue was created between the contemporary detailing and the heavy moldings of the original apartment. The rich palette of colors and materials creates a backdrop for the owners' collection of modern paintings and sculpture.

Key details

  • Designed elegant, understated modern detailing
  • Planned walls and lighting with consideration for art
  • Threaded new infrastructure into the fabric of the existing building
