Transforming a bachelor pad into a contemporary family home in a landmark building

The chimneys and skylights that fill the rooftop of the Victorian Gothic-style Chelsea Hotel were the inspiration as we transformed a simple studio into a multilevel loftlike home for an art-loving young family. In addition, the huge terrace was lavishly landscaped. The finished apartment is full of natural light and takes full advantage of a 360-degree view of Manhattan.

Key details

  • Polished and radically enlarged a vintage studio apartment
  • Obtained New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission approval at public hearing
  • Planned for complete drainage on the roof
  • Sited an outdoor shower among the rooftop plantings
  • Specified a space-saving Pullman-style bath
