A museum and social space for a sixth-generation Adirondack camp

The extended family who owned this estate asked Fradkin & McAlpin to explore options for adding a library-and-clubhouse that could serve as a repository of family history and artifacts as well as a place for meetings and gatherings such as square dances and games of charades. How could the spaces be arranged to accommodate both solitary and communal functions? How would the new structure fit into the landscape? We worked with the client to study these and other questions, suggesting a site at the edge of a meadow.

Key details

  • Designed a small museum in the Adirondack vernacular with a modern twist
  • Planned for heating by wood stove
