A fresh, sophisticated image in a difficult space

With its long, narrow footprint and low ceilings, this fourth-generation New York City general contracting firm’s new office presented a design challenge. Fradkin & McAlpin designated key spaces for special attention and manipulated sight lines and traffic patterns to maximize the impact of these areas. Variations in ceiling height, emphasized by the careful placement of lighting, articulate the spaces and give an impression of greater size. In the reception area, a palette of basic materials, artfully used, creates a sculptural centerpiece that not only greets visitors but is also appreciated daily by the staff.

Key details

  • Turned the limitations of the physical space into a distinctive design
  • Provided both durability and sophistication by specifying sturdy materials in a warm, rich palette
  • Used a light cove, down lights, and pendant lights to emphasize forms, materials, and the hierarchy of spaces within the office
